2022-23 Spirit Squad Trials Information

Thank you for your interest in the spirit program at the University of Memphis. Not only are we blessed with one of the best educational institutions in the country, but also one of the best mind programs. We are very serious about the excellence of our department and actively seek quality people to use their talents, while pursuing higher education and being part of the Tiger Spirit Squads.

We are looking for well-rounded student-athletes who will be committed team members who exemplify athleticism through their skill level, fitness, health, and work ethic. The Memphis Spirit Squads are highly visible within our community and therefore must be able to represent the University in a positive manner while maintaining an athletic/professional appearance.

general informations:

A trial fee of $60 is due with the submission of your documents.

A $30 trial fee is due for anyone who was a member of the 2021-22 teams.

We ONLY accept checks or money orders payable to: University of Memphis Spirit Squads.

CHEER CANDIDATES: payment and documents are due before April 25, 2022

DANCE APPLICANTS: payment and documents are due by May 2, 2022

  1. University of Memphis Spirit Squad Team Application (all candidates)
  2. Non-returnable headshot (new applicants only)
  3. Proof of admission to the University of Memphis (copy of acceptance letter OR college ID) (new applicants only)
  4. University of Memphis Consent to Participate Form (all applicants)
  5. Copy of your insurance card (front/back) (all applicants)
  6. $60 or $30 trial fee (check or money order payable to Spirit Squads of the University of Memphis)


Previous animation experience is required. Members are chosen based on their appearance, communication skills, crowd appeal, placement and timing of moves, tumbling skills, and partner’s stunt abilities.

5:00 p.m. CST:

  • Attire: All applicants must wear a black, blue, or white crop top/sports bra with black shorts or black spanking
  • Hair should be in a low pony with arched tails (white or blue) facing back and game day rolled up. All hair should be loose from your face and pinned back if necessary. Makeup should be performance ready.
  • Jewelry is not allowed, including watches.
  • Male applicants must wear blue, black, gray or white collared shirts tucked into khaki shorts (black, blue or beige)
  • All hair of the male candidate must be out of the face

Tumbling Skills Judged:

  • Standing grouped (MANDATORY)
  • BHS-BHS Back Tuck
  • Specialized standing tumbling (i.e., full BHS-BHS, full standing, etc.)
  • Round BHS Full or Your best Roundoff BHS tuck/Layout
  • Specialty Run Pass (Whip, Arabic, Punch, etc.) at full

Candidates will also learn and be assessed on the following:

  • Fight Song (complete) With both tucks. (Dead Mate)

Toss extension/Liberty pop off
Full extendable corkscrew to the feet (or better throwing stunt)


  • Full extension with pop off disassembly
  • Full Up immediate stretch disassembly

*Applicants can be notified of interview times throughout the day. Not everyone will receive an interview notification.

12:30 p.m. CST (ETA): Final round contestants will be evaluated: stunts, tumbling, fight song, group chants, and more. whether recalls are warranted.
**The University of Memphis Cheer Team 2022-2023 placement will be announced via email and/or social media.

-If you were a member of the 2021-2022 team or received a first-round bypass, you are NOT required to do this part of the audition and automatically advance to Saturday, May 7, 2022.

  • All applicants will learn game day material and be assessed. Please bring pom poms for this portion.
  • Dress code: All contestants must wear a black crop top/sports bra and black boy shorts (high waisted briefs/shorts are not permitted). Hair must be loose and curled or styled on game day. If you have bangs, they should be pinned to your face. Makeup should be performance ready.
  • once assessed, you will be notified by email if you move on to the next round of auditions on Saturday, May 7, 2022

Saturday, May 7, 2022
Location: Memphis Cheer All Star Gymnasium
9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. CST

  • Check-in begins at 9:00 a.m. CST
  • Clinic 10:00-17:00 CST
  • Competitors will first be assessed on ground, freestyle and technical skills. (There may or may not be cuts for this round of auditions)
  • A short break of 30-45 minutes will be allowed for lunch
  • Upon their return, contestants will learn a pom, jazz and hip hop routine which will be judged in the finals on May 8, 2022
  • Attire while learning these routines: fitted tank top with a pom pom, bike shorts (not high waisted), jazz shoes/turners, pom poms. Jazz-same as the pom outfit but will allow bare feet. Hip Hop long-sleeved loose shirt, all kinds of loose pants, all kinds of sneakers
  • Interviews for returning applicants and new applicants will take place throughout the day and after the clinic, dancers should prepare to be available throughout the day in case you are asked to interview.

Skills that will be judged may include, but are not limited to:

  • Straight pirouette (as many as you can do)
  • Advanced turns in second (must include spot changes, pirouettes)
  • Leg extensions
  • Leg towers
  • Optional Flexibility Skills
  • Touching toes
  • Optional jumps
  • Rotating disc
  • Calypso
  • Head spring (at required standing position)
  • Elastic
  • Aerial (required) (both sides encouraged but not required)
  • Front antenna (optional but encouraged)
  • Optional hip hop tricks to choose from

Attire: Your choice of crop top with short shorts (high waisted shorts are not allowed) and your choice of costume for your solo, pom, jazz and hiphop outfit will be the same as the clinic’s dress requirements. the day before.

Time: 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. (dancers should arrive between 8:30 a.m. and 9:00 a.m.)
Cost is $5 cash only
Spectators cannot enter before 9:30 a.m.

*The final round of contestants will begin with a presentation of each with 2-4 eight counts of on-stage improvisation.
Finalists will be evaluated on all skills or selected skills, pom, jazz, hiphop routines and 1 minute of solo of your choice.

The 2022-2023 University of Memphis Pom Squad will be announced on our Spirit Squad page, via email, or social media accounts by 5:00 PM CST.
