49ers’ Trey Lance moves from No.3 pick to No.5 jersey

Trey Lance won’t be No. 1 as the 49ers’ first-round pick, No. 3 in nod to his name, or No. 9 in his days at Marshall High in Minnesota.

Instead, high fives, all around!

The 49ers revealed in a social media post Lance’s name sewn onto a red No.5 jersey, which he can wear for photos (or workouts or lunch or whatever) as he arrives. him and his family today in Santa Clara.

The most prominent 49er to wear No.5: Jeff Garcia, three-time Pro Bowler.

The last 49ers quarterback to pass for 4,000 yards in one season: Garcia, in 2000.

Lance wore No.5 in North Dakota state, where he went undefeated in 17 starts, including 16 in his only full season of action in 2019 that produced a National Championship Subdivision football.

As for No.9, not only did he wear it to high school, but also his younger brother Bryce, as well as his father, Carlton, who excelled in the southwestern state of Minnesota before a professional career that included a two-week stint in the 49ers Training Camp in 1994.

Oh, the Lances also have a dog named Niner, for those digital jersey reasons – and now after Trey’s employer.

“It was more honestly because I was No 9, my dad wore No 9, my brother wore No 9 all through high school,” Trey Lance said Thursday night. “My father wore it throughout his professional career.

“But yes, it works very well. Now it must be God. God did that.

Garcia blessed Lance by taking the No.5, which previously belonged to linebacker Jonas Griffith.

Garcia captioned an Instagram post, “This is what I think of @ trey.lance wearing # 5. Make it a big brother, here’s the discount to you 🤝👊🏻🏈 Wear it with GRIT, DETERMINATION , MOTIVATION and PRIDE. Always represent the @ 49ers with CLASS and HUMILITY. Be a BIG DONOR in your communities and continue to touch the lives of others, this will be your lasting legacy. Demand PERFECTION and strive for EXCELLENCE, your drive to succeed will inspire your teammates to be BIGGER, to be UNITED, to be a BROTHERHOOD, ARMY on the battlefield on a mission to seek out and destroy the enemy.
