In case you missed the news on Thursday, the Buffalo Sabers will formally participate in the 2022 Heritage Classic outdoor game in Hamilton, Ont., Against the Toronto Maple Leafs,
The game takes place on March 13 at 3 p.m. and marks the first time an American team has competed in the Heritage Classic, which typically involves two Canadian franchises competing against each other.
One of the best things about NHL Heritage and Winter Classic games are the phenomenal jerseys the teams wear. Typically, there is a feeling of returning to the sweaters and an infusion of the new with the old. It really gives these games an extra aesthetic.
The BarDown in Canada website (part of TSN) shared a Sabers concept jersey for the Heritage Classic, and Sabers fans are going crazy.
The jerseys are essentially the same logo and stripes as the black and red jerseys the Sabers wore in the late 90s and mid-2000s, but swapped the colors for blue and gold.
To be clear, these are just conceptual jerseys, so this is just an idea thrown out to gauge interest. That doesn’t mean these will be the jerseys they’ll wear on March 13.
Personally, I love these; but I grew up watching the Sabers in the black and red era, so maybe I’m a little biased. I love the current blue and gold jerseys so it’s a cool match for the two jerseys.
My dad hated black and red “goat’s head” swimsuits and a lot of people feel the same way. It elicits both love and loathing on Twitter.
It kind of reminds me of when the Sabers switched to blue and gold “slug” jerseys in the summer of 2006, but we didn’t know what the new jersey would look like, so conceptual jerseys were released and they looked like this.
I would be okay with these becoming a “thing” someday.
