Linking uniforms to tradition
BYU gear staff will continue to announce the uniform suit for each game in a format similar to last season, with each uniform revealed on match week. Since 1964, BYU has donned royal helmets, white helmets, and navy helmets. However, for the first time in the history of the program, BYU will be wearing royal helmets, white helmets and navy helmets in the same season. When BYU added royal helmets and navy helmets in March, they provided the historical context for peacekeepers in BYU football history.
“In 1969, celebrating the centenary of college football, the Cougars reverted to a white helmet with a dual band design that had been used during the 1956 season. Now commonly considered the classic BYU look, the white helmet with blue stripes and the Y logo remained the primary helmet for the next three decades during the Edwards era until a navy helmet was adopted in 1999.
Partnering with Nike in 1999, BYU introduced the navy helmet along with new logos, colors and uniforms. The Navy jersey and helmet had not been used at BYU since the 1950s. The dark blue helmet once again became a part of the lore-rich history of Cougar football, which included the final season of the career. from Coach Edwards to the Hall of Fame in 2000. Current BYU head coach Kalani Sitake also ended his playing career that same season. while other Cougar stars such as award winner Doak Walker, Luke Staley, future NFL quarterbacks Brandon Doman and John Beck and many other great players donned the blue helmets while adding to the legacy of BYU football.
In 2005, under the leadership of head coach Bronco Mendenhall, the Cougars returned to the white helmet with the traditional style jersey that had been popular for much of the Edwards era. The three helmet colors that will now be used by BYU (white, royal and navy blue) have been used during Edwards’ tenure at Provo since 1962. “
