Michael Strahan is already immortalized, but something was still missing. The Pro Football Hall of Fame passer could still see his beloved No.92 running on an NFL field after his legendary career ended, but that won’t be the case soon as the New York Giants gear up to withdraw the number in 2021 – the team announced on Wednesday. For added punch, the ceremony is set to take place against an NFC East rival, the Giants hosting the Philadelphia Eagles on November 28.
“Michael Strahan was one of the greatest players in franchise history,” owner John Mara said via the team’s website. “He deserves to have his number removed as have other Giants immortals, including Mel Hein, Frank Gifford and Lawrence Taylor. Michael’s career has been defined by his accomplishments, consistency and leadership. defensive ends have played the position as well as Michael.
“He was a formidable defenseman of the race as well as a great passer. And he achieved a goal that all players aspire to but few achieve: to win a Super Bowl in his last game. We are grateful for all of his contributions. and are happy to officially say no Giants player will ever wear the No. 92 again. “
“Michael Strahan was a Hall of Fame player and he is a Hall of Fame person,” added President and Executive Vice President Steve Tisch. “Only the best players take their shirts off and Michael is also in that category in Giants and NFL history. He was the accomplished defensive end, a team captain and a winner who helped us win the biggest victory in our history. in Super Bowl XLII. “
The Giants’ second-round pick in 1993, Strahan became one of the best passing throwers to ever take a snapshot. He ended his career with a list of honors – topped with a Super Bowl XLII victory – that included seven Pro Bowl nods, six All-Pro honors, and a spot on the NFL. He ended his career with 141.5 sacks and still holds the NFL record for most sacks in a single season, when he racked up 22.5 in 2001, and has since been inducted into the Ring of Honor and the Giants Hall of Fame.
By having his number retired this season, Strahan has achieved the NFL Immortality Winning Trophy.
