Michigan to wear throwback uniforms against Tennessee in NCAA Tournament

INDIANAPOLIS — The Michigan men’s basketball team will once again sport a retro look when they face Tennessee on Saturday night in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

The program announced that it will wear the 1989 uniforms for the second time this season. They commemorate the winning team of the national championship of this season:

This is the third time Wolverines have worn substitutes this season. They sported “dark mode” talks in mid-January against Illinois in Champaign. A team spokesperson said these had no special meaning other than being a different color option.

They also carried the throwbacks from 1989 in an 87-70 win over the Spartans on March 1.

The 1988-89 Michigan basketball team went 24-7 in the regular season and earned an overall NCAA Tournament bid. Steve Fisher took over as head coach before the NCAA Tournament and led the Wolverines to the Final Four, where they won a rematch against Illinois to advance to the national championship against Seton Hall.

Michigan outlasted Seton Hall in overtime thanks to two clutch free throws from Rumeal Robinson that followed a controversial foul. Glen Rice led the Wolverines with 31 points, including 5 for 12 on 3-pointers; Robinson and Sean Higgins also scored in double figures.

The 1988-89 season represents the program’s only national championship to date, although Michigan has returned to the Final Four twice in the past decade.

Michigan reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament beating Colorado State, 75-63, behind a strong performance from center Hunter Dickinson and a spark of Frankie Collinswho made the first start of his college career as a relief to DeVante’ Jones (concussion protocol).
