Kansas City Royals

When the Royals take to the field for Saturday’s game against the New York Yankees, they will wear uniforms unprecedented in team history.

That’s the goal of the City Connect series from Nike and Major League Baseball.

“The designs,” Nike wrote in a press release, “continue to explore a franchise’s connection to its city and its fan base, each with distinct personalities, values, customs and traditions.”

The Royals unveil their City Connect jerseys and caps on Monday ahead of the game, and team president/CEO John Sherman thinks the look will appeal to people across the Kansas City area.

“This design is one that fans of all ages can really enjoy,” Sherman said in a team statement. “From the fountains that are part of Kansas City’s heritage, to the jersey colors symbolizing the rich history of baseball and the Kansas City Royals, the uniform showcases the distinct elements of our community.”

The Royals began working last fall with Nike and Major League Baseball on a design that would be special in Kansas City. Four macro themes were discussed at the start, said Sarah Tourville, the team’s senior vice president and chief revenue and innovation officer.

It was narrowed down to two, and then a main idea emerged for the “City of Fountains” team.

“What we really worked with Nike and the league was to create a story that would unite our city,” Tourville said. “We wanted to look at Kansas City’s distinct heritage and history, nature and unique elements, to tell that story. Our story focuses on some of the elements of Kansas City that people loved, so the fountains will be a main focal point.

“The fountains have become a gesture of welcome and openness that remains in our city. And then because we had a broad theme, we really wanted to bring in other elements that were unique to Kansas City storytelling.

The fountain theme is evident in the caps and logo on the chest of the jersey.

These are some of the other touches of the uniforms, which are two-tone with powder blue and dark blue.

“I think the intersection of art, culture and history allows this platform to speak to people of all ages and ages,” Tourville said. “The baseball purist will love it. But I think you’re going to find the appeal of a younger, more diverse audience who are connected not only to the Royals, but who feel a sense of pride in wearing the full range of clothing that will come from this rollout.

“Because there’s this pride in Kansas City, and it’s not just about the Royals, but it’s the broader community that we represent every day.”

Connect to fans

The Royals team store will open at 9 a.m. Monday and these jerseys, caps, hoodies and more will be on sale. Fans will also find them at the MLB team store.

On Saturday, the Royals will wear them for the first time, as the team plans content on the Crown Vision board associated with City Connect uniforms. Next, there will be a drone light show, the first time the Royals have staged such an event. Tourville said tickets for the game are still available.
