Strake Jesuit sweeps Jersey Village to reach state baseball

After the final, players ran from the dugout around the field and huddled around pitcher Andy Leon as other players threw the water coolers at them.

The Strake Jesuit Crusaders defeated the Jersey Village Falcons 9-3 in Game 2 of the Region 6A III Finals at Cy Falls High School to advance to the State Tournament for the first time in US history. school.

“Words can’t really describe it,” said Leon, who retired the Falcons to finish a full game early in the seventh inning. “Seeing all of your teammates burn out, pouring water on you, nothing like it. There is no other group of guys that I prefer to do this with.

Strake Jesuit had won the best-of-three series opener 8-2 earlier on Friday after Game 1 was postponed by rain on Thursday.

The Crusaders’ wins in the Regional Finals were emblematic of their dominance throughout the playoffs. In the first five series, Strake Jesuit is 10-1 with a race differential of 58-27. Their only loss came in the first game of the regional semi-final against Katy Tompkins, 8-1. The Crusaders won the next two games to qualify.

“We talked about being mentally strong,” said Jesuit Strake coach Raul Garcia-Rameau. “We’ve had some good pitchers throughout the year so we felt really good that our pitching staff was deep. We are back to the wall from the middle of the neighborhood.

Strake started the game from District 23-6A 2-2 and was 4-3 in the first half before going 6-1 to advance to the playoffs.

In Friday’s deciding game, the Crusaders took a 3-0 lead after two innings. They added six points in the fifth to put the game out of reach.

Leon had the big blow with a double of two points.

“He threw me a first fast pitch,” said Leon. “I was sitting at the first fastball pitch. I just swung, and the rest is history.

Leon is one of 14 seniors on the squad who graduated on May 22.

Garcia-Rameau tells these players that while they are alumni of the school, they are not yet baseball alumni.

“I wouldn’t want to do anything else with the start of my summer,” Leon proclaimed.

Jesuit Strake will play the state tournament on Friday in Round Rock.
